The "first" that started it all: the Quarterly Journal of Studies on Alcohol (QJSA). Keller started to work for the Journal as Editorial Secretary in 1942 and worked his way up to "Editor," (i.e., Editor-in-Chief) by 1959. He moved along with both the journal and the Center of Alcohol Studies to Rutgers in 1962 and remained atop the masthead until he retired from Rutgers in 1977.
Keller, the Journal editor
Mark Keller was involved with the Journal from early on and remained so until the end of his career. He worked his way up at the Quarterly Journal of Studies on Alcohol (QJSA) from an editorial secretary in 1942 to assistant editor in 1944 to managing editor in 1950. In 1959, he was appointed Editor-in-Chief and held that title when the Journal was renamed the Journal of Studies on Alcohol (JSA) in 1975.

Keller kept meticulous documentation related to Journal business. The files in the Keller Papers contain material related to the operations of the Journal and correspondence related to the operations, such as QJSA memoranda from various periods and years, documents related to JSA financial meetings and corporation minutes, and the documentation of the Journal establishing the Keller Award to honor Mark Keller.
The Keller Papers contain substantial Journal-related correspondence with select authors, both professional and personal. He corresponded with virtually all the key people in the field, discussing all matters, ideas, proposals, concepts, and research related to his work as Journal editor and editor/mentor.

Keller changed the name of the Journal to indicate the switch to monthly publication in 1975. Although he retired as Editor-in-Chief in 1977, he returned for a stint as Acting Editor from 1981 to 1983 and was listed as “Editor Emeritus” until his death in 1995 in recognition of his contributions.
