Alumni Institute

Alumni Institute of the Summer School of Alcohol Studies

As the Summer School of Alcohol Studies continued to grow at Yale, it became an important educational resource for individuals in the alcohol field. After a few successful sessions, the School started to offer refresher courses called Alumni Institutes. The importance of the School to its alumni had them found an Alumni Association, which published an annual Alumni News informing members about past and forthcoming events, programs, publications, and success stories of the Association.

The yearly dues could be used only for scholarships to the School, as the members wanted to give others the opportunity to attend the School. The Alumni Association Scholarship Committee, chaired by James Emmert, devoted a tremendous amount of time and effort to the scholarship process. They established criteria, reviewed applications, and often met with the scholarship recipients.

Alumni Scholarships

The yearly dues paid by the members of the SSAS Alumni Associaton could be used only for scholarships to the School, as the members wanted to give others the opportunity to attend the School.  Pictured here is a group of the recipients of the various Alumni scholarships to attend the Refresher Course of the Summer School of Alcohol Studies, Rutgers University.

Advanced School of Alcohol and Drug Studies

The Alumni Institute soon evolved into an Advanced Summer School of Alcohol Studies. After the move to Rutgers in 1962, other educational opportunities grew out of the Summer School, such as the New Jersey Summer School of Alcohol Studies and the Summer School of Alcohol and Drugs Studies.
